Two years ago I started a Facebook group called Munroaming, which encourages Munro baggers to get together on-line or in real time to walk Scottish mountains.
The page has grown to more than 600 people and there is a great deal of regular posting, with baggers offering that offer ideas, inspiration, tips, photos and advice.
I have met new Munro baggers through Munroaming and enjoyed seeing other people’s posts about their Munro bagging.
What are the Munros?
It was Sir Hugh Munro (1856 – 1919) who first compiled a list of mountains in Scotland with a height of more than 3,000ft. He called this the Munros Table.
Sadly Munro never compleated (the correct spelling in this context!) a round before he died and, instead, the Reverend A. E. Robertson was the first in 1901 to compleat all the known summits at that time.
Over the years the list has been revised thanks to modern measuring devices and now stands at 282. People aim to walk all the 282 Munros in a round.
In the last 30 to 40 years, some 6,000 people have claimed at least one round of Munros. The record for the most rounds is 15 by Steve Fallon. Hazel Strachan has recorded the most round for a woman and is currently walking her ninth round.
So far I have walked 217 Munros and hope to compleat in the new few years.
