Hiking is an amazing way to get outside and enjoy nature. It is an enjoyable exercise that can be done by people of any age and fitness level. If you are new to hiking, here is a beginner’s guide to help you get started.

What is hiking?

Hiking is term that usually refers to walking in the countryside. In the UK, many people still use the word walking, while hiking is generally used by Americans. However, hiking and walking mean the same.

Hiking can be enjoyed on low-level paths and trails, or at higher elevation in hills and mountains. The activity covers a huge range of different types of hikes. There are many different hiking trails around the world that offer unique experiences. Having a good route planner will stand you in good stead.

There are day hikes, where you go out for a few hours and walk a short distance. Then there are weekend backpacking trips, which take place over multiple days. You can also make extended backpacking trips that last several months or even years.

Types of hikes

There are many different types of hikes, from easy nature walks to strenuous backcountry adventures. Here are some of the most popular types of hikes:

1. Nature walks: These hikes usually involve a fairly easy walk on a well-marked trail, with stops to enjoy the scenery and wildlife.

2. Day hikes: A day hike is a great way to get out and explore a new area without having to spend the night away from home. These hikes can range from easy strolls to more challenging routes.

3. Backpacking trips: A backpacking trip involves carrying all your supplies with you on your back as you hike on trails or in more remote locations. This type of hike can be challenging but also very rewarding.

What to bring on a hike

When going on a hike, it is important to be prepared. You should take plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, a hat, and insect repellent. It is also a good idea to bring a small first-aid kit in case of any emergencies.

A map and compass and a GPS route on a smartphone app, such as OS Maps, or even uploaded to your smartwatch are important, too, so you know where you are going.

If you are going on a longer hike in more demanding terrain, you’ll need to ensure you are dressed to suit the conditions. Appropriate footwear is important and always remember to break in a new pair of hiking boots before using them on a hike. Blisters are not something you want in the middle of a hike.

Add baselayers, a waterproof jacket and trousers, an insulated jacket, hat, gloves and sunglasses at the most basic level of hiking kit.

You might also want to think about walking poles – read about the benefits of poles – and a bivvy bag or emergency blanket in case you get into trouble.

Hiking safety how to be safe on a hike

It’s important to build your experience and knowledge. If you are new to hiking, go out with friends or groups that have more experience. Learning from others and building up from easy walks in good weather to higher altitude hikes when you may encounter rain, cold and snow will help to keep you safe while hiking.

As well as dressing for the conditions so that you stay warm and dry, you’ll want to learn about a range of hiking how tos, such as reading the weather forecast, knowing about potential avalanche conditions in winter, reading a map with a compass, knowing where you are by using a map or a GPS map tracker etc.

Conclusion: Hiking can be a fun and rewarding experience for anyone interested in getting outdoors. By following the advice in this article, you can be well on your way to having a safe and enjoyable hike.
