After a long week, a weekend break is an ideal time for easing yourself into the world of travel, whether you choose to travel alone, with family, your partner or friends.

The best thing is that you can discover Britain’s natural beauty during weekend trips. With staycations still very much on trend, there is so much to explore in 2022.

To help you out, we’ve selected some of the top weekend getaways in Britain, whether you want to unwind in a village in the Cotswolds or experience the grandeur of Windsor.

Take a look at this article to find out about the six places around England that you should visit during a weekend.

6 best weekend getaways in England

The Cotswolds

Nowhere screams “weekend vacation in the country” more than the lovely Cotswolds. This is an amazing place if you are someone who wants to experience a memorable weekend trip in a gorgeous village.

The Cotswolds is one of England’s prettiest regions and is located about two hours west of London. There is 787 square miles of the rural landscape to explore and many charming towns and villages.

For example, Castle Comb is a perfect area for staying while enjoying many easy-going walks on a network of trails and paths.

Cambridge

Few places can provide the kind of opportunity for an historic getaway that Cambridge offers. The university city is breathtakingly beautiful and fascinating for visitors with a long and interesting heritage.

There’s plenty of romance to be had, too, such as journeying by punt on the River Cam. A punt is a traditional shallow-bottomed boat that has been utilised to navigate the bodies of water around the city for centuries.

Windsor

If you’re searching for an enjoyable weekend getaway, take a 30-minute train trip from London to Windsor, which is located on its western edge.

Windsor, which is situated on the south bank of the River Thames in the lovely county of Berkshire, is well-known not only for its charming old medieval mansions and small cobblestone streets, but for Windsor Castle.

Windsor Castle, the longtime home of the British Royal family, is a wonderful place to see on a weekend getaway.

Kent

The county of Kent has long been referred to as the “Garden of England” and is only a short train trip from London. It’s a beautiful and appealing area to visit and is blessed with some of the best weather in England and fantastic attractions.

Canterbury is a great starting point for a weekend getaway in Kent.  A must-see attraction is Canterbury Cathedral, the Anglican church’s headquarters and the site of the death of Archbishop Thomas Becket in 1170.

Durham

The historic city of Durham located in the county of the same name is one of England’s most popular UNESCO World Heritage Sites and has a lot to offer weekend visitors looking for something exciting to do.

In total, 600 structures form its UNESCO designation, the majority of which are found in the historic city centre.

You should devote most of your time to this area in order to explore the city’s well-preserved ancient architecture, which includes Durham Cathedral and the iconic Town Hall.

Navigating your way through the numerous twisting, tiny lanes that lead to this magnificent building, which was begun in 1093 and finished 40 years later, is half the fun.

Bristol

Many of England’s most well-known explorers began their journeys to distant regions from Bristol, which is less than two hours by rail from London.

In the 15th century, John Cabot set out on his exploration of North America from the city’s protected harbour on the Avon River, into the Bristol Channel. This incident helped to establish the city’s status as one of the most significant ports in the nation and made it a beautiful place filled with historical aspects.

A weekend trip to Bristol should allow enough time to tour the harbour. Its warehouses and wharves have been transformed into a variety of intriguing, must-see galleries.

This once-forgotten location, also called the Floating Harbor, because of its ability to keep ships floating against the tides, has been wonderfully re-imagined as a fabulous tourist attraction.

If you are into galleries and museums, you can check out other European museums and galleries that will make you want to take a tour around other European countries.

Conclusion

Overall, we outlined six places around England that you should visit during a weekend break. We hope that the places mentioned above can inspire you to spend an amazing weekend with your friends and family, exploring new places in England.

Once you have done exploring these destinations, you can also look into other destinations such as the best places to enjoy staycations in Scotland!
