Things to prepare before hiking Snowdon

Written by Fiona

Are you preparing to hike Snowdon? The walk to the highest summit in Wales is both rewarding and in one of the most beautiful areas in all of the UK. The route can be challenging, though, for some people and so it is important that you know how to prepare.

Research the trails

First, you should research the trails. One great thing about Snowdon is that there are a number of trails that you can take and ones suited to different abilities. The most popular is the Llanberis Path, which normally takes people around four to six hours.

Prepare your body & mind

There are paths for different abilities, but it is still a good idea to get your fitness levels up prior to heading for Snowdon. Getting in shape should also help you to get mentally prepared.

Pack the essentials

There are many things that you will need to take with you, including:

  • Waterproof
  • Baselayers
  • Walking boots
  • Walking socks
  • Hat and gloves
  • Rucksack
  • Map and compass
  • First aid kit and a whistle
  • Snacks and water.

Dress for the weather

Following this, you want to make sure that you dress for the weather. Over-heating can be an issue in the warmer months, while hyperthermia can be an issue in winter, so always check the forecast and dress appropriately.

Organise accommodation

You also want to arrange accommodation in advance and there are some lovely holiday homes for sale in North Wales that would be the ideal base for a holiday in the area.

Check the time is right

You also want to check that the time is right – you do not want to be hiking Snowdon in the snow, excessive rain or in the dark.

Research the town

There are a number of charming towns in Snowdonia, so you want to research these and find places to visit. Some of the best places include Llanberis, Conwy, Portmerion and Bala.

Schedule time

You want to make sure that you have enough time to really make the most out of the trip. You should research the trails and see how long on average each one takes and choose the option best suited to your needs. You also want to schedule enough time for exploring the National Park and nearby towns.

Enjoy the experience

Finally, be sure to enjoy yourself. You certainly need to be well-prepared for a trip to Snowdonia, especially in winter, but you also want to make sure that you enjoy and really make the most out of your time.

It is an incredibly beautiful part of the world with a lot to see and do, so you want to make sure that it is a positive experience and one that allows you to create happy new memories.

These are some of the main ways that you can prepare for your trip, which will hopefully help you to make the most out of this experience.
