Where to book a ski holiday in America

Written by Fiona

December 12 2022

I remember on my first skiing and snowboarding holiday in America, sitting on a chairlift with Hubby G. We were in Steamboat in Colorado and the snow was amazing. It was powder dry and quite unlike anything we had experienced in Scotland or the UK. We got chatting to another skier and asked him if he was to choose to holiday anywhere else in the US for the best skiing snow, where would it be? Immediately he said “Utah”.

The next time we headed to America to ski, we chose Utah and we delighted by the quality of snow in many of the ski resorts there, including Park City, Canyons, Deer Valley and also the four smaller resorts of Solitude, Brighton, Snowbird and Alta.

You’ll see I’ve written many reasons to ski in Utah:

And it turns out that one of our favourite Utah ski centres, Snowbird, makes it into a top 10 of the most popular skiing destinations. This is a list of the most searched American ski resorts on Google in 2022.

The headlines from the survey carried out by Holidu, a booking portal for holiday rentals, include:

  • The most popular searched US ski resort is Copper Mountain in Colorado.
  • There are seven US states in the top 10 searches.
  • 3 resorts in Colorado are in the top 10.
  • 2 resorts in California area in the top 10.

Of course, I had a glance down the list of the top 50 most Google searched resorts, according to the survey, just to see which ones I have been to.

My list includes:

  • Snowbird at number nine
  • Winter Park, Colorado,  and Deer Valley in Utah, at joint 11
  • Telluride, also Colorado, at 26
  • Steamboat, also Colorado at 28
  • Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Park City, Utah, at joint 33
  • Crested Butte, also Colorado, at 39
  • Solitude and Brighton, both also Utah, at joint 41
  • Alta, also Utah at 48.

I agree that all these resorts are well worth visiting. Looking at the rest of the resorts on the list, there is certainly a lot to choose from. I am going to have a look at the resorts I’ve not yet skied and also at the states I haven’t visited. It’s always fun to have a list of new destinations.

I guess they are in the top 50 most search resorts, then they might be busier than other resorts but, to be honest, I have rarely visited at truly busy ski centre in America.

Season pass to different resorts

When skiing in America and Canada we like to visit a few different resorts on an extended trip. We buy a season pass, such as the EPIC pass, because it allows us to pay for one pass and then take advantage of visiting lots of different ski centres.

Read: An Epic pass to multiple resorts across North America

This type of trip works best if you are on holiday for 10 days or more and the resort/ resorts you plan to visit are covered by the season pass that you choose. There are other seasons passes to consider but we like the EPIC because it includes ski resorts such as our favourites Kicking Horse, in British Columbia, Park City and the Canyons in Utah, as well as seven days of skiing in the Three Valleys in Europe.

This is where we skied with out EPIC pass on our last trip: Pristine groomers in Whistler, silky powder in Revelstoke, challenging steeps in Kicking Horse and “legendary” bowls in Fernie.

In the US state of Utah, we skied many more miles, at America’s largest resort, Park City & Canyons, and the smaller mountain areas of Snowbird, Alta and Snowbasin.

In the neighbouring state of Colorado, we discovered two other skiing gems, Telluride and Crested Butte.

Holidu surveyed 100 ski resorts in the United States and extracted the average Global Search Volume for each resort per month in the past year.
