New things to do while travelling

Taking a holiday is a great luxury. You get to escape from the constant hustle and bustle of everyday life. You can finally put on your out -of-office email and set your phone to silent. It’s the time that we get to escape and take time entirely for ourselves.

But before you get to the holiday, there’s usually some travelling involved. Whether it’s long haul or short haul, travelling can be tedious. It’s the least favourite part of everyone’s journey, especially if there are unprecedented delays or complications.

So, how do you cope with the time when you’re waiting for your flight or ferry? There are lots of options to choose from. Whether you like to spend some time playing an online game or having a quick cat nap, we’ve got all the best ways to do make your travelling time less of a chore.

How to entertain yourself while travelling

Catch up on some reading

Reading is the one hobby many of us struggle to keep up with in our everyday lives. It feels so much easier to stick something on TV and completely dissociate from the day. However, when you’re on holiday, you have a lot of time.

But why wait until you get to your destination to get stuck into the book that’s been on your shelf for the past year? There’s no time like the present when you’re on your travels.

You’ve got plenty of time to sit down and get fully immersed in the story. Whether you love a true crime novel or the next best autobiography, there’s no time like the present.

An alternative to reading a book is an audio book. This can be easier to focus on while travelling.

Listen to a podcast

One downside to being at an airport is the constant noise of people rushing about trying to get their food or to their gate. A great way to zone all of that out is to simply plug in your headphones and dive into a great podcast (or an audio book, as suggested above).

When listening to a podcast you need to be really focused and listening intently in order to enjoy them to their full potential. This makes them the perfect way to spend spare time when you’re at the airport. You can sit back and fully indulge in the podcast – no matter what the genre.

Play games

For those people who can’t sit still when they’re travelling, you might need something a little more immersive to pass the time. So, why not play one of your favourite games? Take advantage of the free airport Wi-Fi and get stuck into a great game.

Casino games are one of the most popular options with players having a choice between various online casino providers that all offer a range of different casino games. Casino apps can easily be downloaded onto a handheld device such as a smartphone or tablet so players can play on-the-go whenever they wish.

Other games might include word based apps that you can download on to your phone.

Do some holiday planning

What better time to plan what you’re going to do and where you’ll go while on your trip than when you’re waiting to get there? The week leading up to a holiday is always stressful. You’ve got to pack, you’re busy writing a handover for work and you’ve got to do all your washing you’ve been putting off.

There’s no time for planning – until it comes to the time to actually travel. Once you’re ready at the airport, all you can think about it getting on that plane and getting there. So, while it’s all you’ve got on the brain, why not use your time productively and start planning your days?

You can have a search around for the top-rated tourist attractions. Or maybe check out some travelling blogs to see what you can do that’s a bit more off the beaten track. You can plan out what days you want to chill, where you want to eat and where the best nightlife is.

Why not even go into full planning mode and make a spreadsheet if you’re that way inclined?

Watch a TV show or film

Is there a series you’ve been meaning to get into but haven’t had the chance? Maybe you’ve been saving something for when you can fully focus and get stuck in. Now is your chance! What better time to indulge yourself into a good film or TV show than when you’ve got lots of time on your hands?

It’;s a good idea to download programmes or films before you set off. Then plug yourself in, get away from the airport noise and into whatever world you fancy engaging in. Why wait until the plane to enjoy a film when you can get stuck in right away?

Listen to your favourite playlist

There’s nothing that improves our mood more than listening to our favourite tunes. So why not take the opportunity to tune out the sounds of the airport and plug into all the best music? If you’re stressed with the pressure of travelling and delays, take the edge off and boost your mood with your favourite playlist.

Or if you fancy something new, why not take a look a pre-made playlist to listen to? You might discover a new artist or even a new genre that you enjoy. You can select a playlist based on your mood or even find a holiday playlist to listen to.

No matter what way you choose to kill time at the airport, all of our suggestions will guarantee that your holiday will get off to a flying start.
