Review: On Zero Running jacket

Many running brands sell a lightweight running jacket. The On Zero jacket is ultra lightweight and weather protecting. But what is it like to run in?

My thoughts: On Zero running jacket

The fabric is very light, soft and floaty, like parachute material. You hardly know you are wearing it. Yet, it offers good protection in the wind and cold and some light rain resistance. It’s a jacket for chilly spring and summer days rather than the harsher days of winter.

There are vented underarms to allow sweat to escape. I have found the jacket does get a bit whiffy under the arms due to dry sweat, which means I have had to wash it quite frequently. It’s machine washable, thankfully.

I like that the fabric is made from recycled products.

I love the purple colour, so I think the jacket looks great, although the fabric does look a but creased most of the time. The see-through white colour is not a favourite for me.

It’s not cheap at £140, but it could be a useful piece of running kit. It stuffs down into a small and lightweight ball, so it’s handy to take with you on days when you think it might be a bit breezy at higher altitude, or if you are not convinced the wind and drizzle will stay away.

I have worn the jacket many times since I was sent it and mainly for slightly cooler evening runs. I find I can wear it without feeling too hot and when I do take it off, it is easily stuffed into a side pocket of my vest pack.

Would I buy one? If I was looking for an ultra lightweight extra layer for chilly mornings or evenings I might well buy one. However, it’s a costly layer for a product that doesn’t offer more rain protection. I think it’s a nice luxury item and if you are looking to treat a partner or friend, then it’s a generous gift.
