Review: inov-8 Roclite Pro G 400 GTX V2 walking boots

Written by Fiona

April 24 2023

I am already a fan of the inov-8 Roclite Pro G 400 GTX walking boots and now the brand has updated the model with their V2 version. inov-8 says of the new V2 model: “New upper
and midsole technologies deliver greater comfort, a better fit, more protection and support,
increased energy return and longer lasting durability.”

The V2s have an “updated heel lock system” for a more “locked-in fit”. Combined with the heel-cupped footbed and the padded ankle cuff, the aim is to give more support, stability and comfort in the rear of the boot.

The outsoles of the boots remain unchanged, featuring the use of Graphene, the
world’s strongest material. Graphene is infused into the rubber to create what inov-8 claims is “super tough gripping treads that have proven to exceed 1000 miles of use”. The soles have 6mm lugs.

The V2 version has a new ripstop upper material to improve durability. inov-8 say the tighter weave of the fabric will better protect the waterproof GORE-TEX XCR membrane underneath by repelling more dirt.

Other features:

  • Heel to toe drop is 8mm (20mm to 12mm).
  • Weight: Average of 400g across size curve
  • Price: £210
  • Buy from: inov-8 for men’s boots and women’s boots.

My thoughts: inov-8 Roclite Pro G 400 GTX V2 walking boots

I have been wearing inov-8 Roclite Pro G 400 boots for most of my walking in the last couple of years. I’ve had two versions of the first model and now the newer V2 model. I like that they are lightweight and comfortable, like running shoes, yet with the stabilising ankle cuff.

The sole grip has always been good and the Gore-Tex waterproofing is great to start with. I find that with synthetic uppers and Gore-Tex, the waterproofing quite substantially reduces after about a year of wear. This seems to be fairly normal for most such fabric boots.

You can improve the waterproofing by treating with a waterproof enhancing spray.

inov-8 reports that the new version will have improved waterproofing. Only time will tell with this feature.

Base of the boots: New boot and old boot have the same grippy soles.

The fit of the new boots is what feels different. The heel keep is more secure and the insole is more supportive under the arch of my foot. I think the forefoot is a bit neater, too, both on the width and the length.

The ankle cuff does not rise as high at the rear of the boot. This might suit some people because it allows more flexibility but I have found that the top of the ankle cuff rubs my Achilles tendon in an annoying place. This is likely to be an personal issue, rather than something that will affect others. I simply prefer the higher rise ankle of the original model.

The fabric of the newer model does look more durable, which is a bonus because the original version has worn fairly quickly.

Rear of the boots. New on the left and old on the right.

So, in conclusion, while the internal fit of the V2 boot is better for my foot, the ankle cuff doesn’t suit me so well. The rest of the boot looks and feels very similar and it’s a boot I have come to favour for most of my hill and mountain walking.

inov-8 says the new V2 boot offers “increased energy return”. I can’t really tell you if there is any difference. Measuring energy return is difficult to do! All I can say is the boots do offer good cushioning – not too much, bit not too little, either.
