Few destinations can rival the charm and variety of the UK’s beaches when it comes to a fun-filled day out with children. There are plenty of coastal spots in the country from stretches of soft sand to intriguing rock pools, all of which are perfect for young explorers and their families.

Bournemouth Beach: Where Fun Meets Relaxation

Bournemouth Beach is a family favourite for its combination of entertainment and serenity. Its award-winning sands stretch for miles and there is plenty of space for building sand castles or a leisurely picnic. With shallow waters, children are allowed to safely paddle and parents can lay back and relax knowing lifeguards are on duty.

The nearby beachfront attractions like the Oceanarium also make for the perfect escapade for curious minds. This area is also a family friendly haven, with resorts by the seaside providing excellent facilities.

Weston-super-Mare: A Classic Seaside Experience

Weston-super-Mare is famous for its nostalgic charm, and is a combination of traditional beach fun and modern attractions. One of the highlights is undoubtedly the Grand Pier with its arcades, rides and activities which are all suitable for all ages. But with the wide open space and its extensive tidal range, this beach is an ideal place to fly a kite and dig in the sand.

Extra touches of whimsy come in the form of donkey rides along the shore, along with nearby eateries dishing out fish and chips for a true coastal treat. Marine Lake, which is a safe swimming area away from the open sea, is also worth visiting.

Rhossili Bay: Nature’s Playground

Rhossili Bay is a beautiful place on the Gower Peninsula in Wales, where natural beauty is king. With its rugged appeal it doesn’t seem so much like traditional tourist hubs, but there are plenty of opportunities for adventure.

For older children, surfing or bodyboarding is a good option, while younger ones can explore rock pools packed with marine life. For a memorable walk, make your way along the coastal walks to Worm’s Head; a dramatic tidal island.

Blackpool Beach: Entertainment and Excitement

Blackpool is known for its entertainment, and its beach is no different. Set against the iconic tower, this vibrant destination blends sandy beaches with exciting activities. Families looking for an adrenaline rush should not miss the Blackpool Pleasure Beach amusement park, while the promenade offers more laid-back fun, such as traditional candy stalls and tram rides. If you visit in the fall, kids will love the Illuminations.

St. Ives: A Creative Coastal Escape

St. Ives in Cornwall is known for its artistic vibe and because of it, this is a place where the family can enjoy a unique beach experience. Porthmeor Beach’s crystal clear waters are fantastic for swimming, and the soft sands beckon creative play.

With its combination of culturally enriching as well as relaxing, this destination is perfect for families to wander the picturesque streets to discover galleries and shops. Porthminster Beach, nearby, is calmer by the side, safe enough for younger children to paddle.

Weymouth Beach: A Traditional Favourite

With its golden sands, gentle waters, and friendly atmosphere, Weymouth Beach personifies the quintessential British seaside holiday. Little ones will be entertained by Punch and Judy shows, and there are pedal boats and kayaks to keep you active on the water. A bit further out, the Jurassic Skyline Tower offers some great coastal views, and it’s also very educational, too.

Whitstable: A Coastal Gem for All Ages

If you want a quieter, equally charming day out, then Whitstable on the Kent coast is top of the list. Collecting shells on the pebble beach is ideal, and the calm waters are perfect for paddling or kayaking. There are local restaurants where you can enjoy fresh seafood or you can explore the town’s independent shops. Tankerton Slopes nearby has grassy areas perfect for a picnic with incredible views over the sea.

Bamburgh Beach: History Meets Tranquility

This beach, in Northumberland, which blends historical intrigue with natural beauty, is situated against the background of Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland. While the striking dunes offer an exciting playground, the broad stretch of sand is ideal for games and leisurely strolls. Young swimmers can enjoy the mild waves, and the castle tour adds an educational element to the day.

St Andrews West Sand

Scotland boasts many stunning beaches with some being very accessible from the roadside and others a long hike to reach. West Sands,is most famous as a location for the acclaimed film Chariots of Fire.

The beach is close to top golf courses and 15 minutes from the town centre. Whether you enjoy a beach strolll, horse riding, kite surfingh or other watersports, it’s a great destination when on holiday.

Planning the Perfect Beach Day

Preparation is the key to a stress-free outing no matter which destination you choose. By packing sunscreen, snacks, and spare clothes, your family can enjoy the most out of the experience. The many of these beaches are close to cafes, shops, and facilities so that families of all ages could enjoy these beaches.

With so many family friendly options, there is something for everyone on the UK’s coastline. These destinations offer memories that will last a lifetime and whether your children love splashing in the sea, exploring nature, or just enjoying classic seaside entertainment, you will find something for them to enjoy.
