Running is a popular British pastime for any season, allowing people to experience nature while pushing their bodies. Whether you’re an experienced marathoner or a casual weekend jogger, winter brings a fresh set of challenges, particularly with slippery terrain and cold temperatures.
The key is knowing where to go for both safety and scenery. Here are some of the top UK locations for long-distance running this winter.
The Lake District
A haven for trail runners with a variety of routes, the Lake District offers routes that range from serene lakeside paths to demanding hill circuits. In particular, the Fairfield Horseshoe is a winter favourite, delivering high-altitude views without being too remote. Similarly, the Buttermere Loop offers a peaceful yet invigorating run around one of the region’s most picturesque lakes.
There is also the Whinlatter Forest Park, which offers a 5k trail with wide forest roads and rewarding views over Derwentwater and Keswick.
Snowdonia National Park
Snowdonia is well known for its dramatic mountain landscapes, making it ideal for both adventurous and relaxed winter runs. For example, the Snowdonia Slate Trail winds through historic valleys and remote villages, which make it perfect for a gentle, long-distance experience.
On the other hand, Nantlle Ridge is the better option for season runners seeking their next challenge. With a combination of elevation, colder conditions, and difficult terrain, running here demands the right gear. For one, we recommend a thermal base layer and a pair of lightweight thermal gloves, alongside an insulating mid-layer and a windproof jacket to protect against the biting winds.
Richmond Park
For anyone based in or around London, there are a few spots closer to home that are perfectly suited to a winter run. Chief among them is Richmond Park, which can offer a great escape from city life. The vast open spaces and gentle terrain are ideal for a long winter run, and you can always stop in a local cafe after you’ve worked up an appetite.
If you’re interested, check out the Tamsin Trail. This 7.35-mile loop goes around the entire park and features a gorgeous mix of woodland paths, gentle hills, and scenic views.
Scottish Highlands
The Scottish Highlands offer some of the best running routes, with plenty of wild, rugged and remote areas to enjoy, and whatever the season. However, in winter, you might want to keep to the well-trodden trails. The Caledonian Canal Towpath is both flat and well-maintained, making it a safe and accessible route.
Alternatively, the West Highland Way offers a more intense challenge, with a combination of forest paths and open moorland.
