Short ski break: Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, Mont Blanc ski area, France

With skiing there is a lot of luck involved in the weather. For once, I was fortunate to have great snow and sunshine on a short break to Saint-Gervais-les-Bains (St Gervais) in Haute-Savoie, France. Located only about an hour’s drive from Geneva airport and at the foot of Mont Blanc, the 19th century spa and market town has its own ski area, as well as access to the 445km Evasion Mont-Blanc ski area, also taking in the ski resorts of Megève, Les Contamines, Combloux and La Giettaz.

St Gervais is an attractive mountain town both in summer and winter and it offers a less crowded, more authentic and budget-friendly alternative to neighbouring Megève. In town, there are plenty of shops, restaurants and a famous thermal baths. The ski slopes are acclaimed for being tree-lined and are best for beginners to intermediates.

I visited St Gervais to stay with a friend Jo who moved from Scotland with her partner Ryan and children. It was a chance to catch up and share a couple of ski days.

I skied with the local ski pass: St Gervais Mont Blanc access.

Pros and cons of St Gervais

St Gervais is very easy to reach from Geneva, whether by shared taxi, private taxi or train. In 2024, a new gondola was opened, Le Valléen, connecting the Le Fayet train station directly to the Saint-Gervais town centre and the ski area. This has made access even easier.

It operates year-round, and provides a five-minute, low-carbon, sustainable transit alternative to reduce traffic, replacing road travel with a direct and scenic connection.

There are plenty of accommodation options in St Gervais, although I didn’t require any thanks to Jo and Ryan.

One oft-said negative of St Gervais and the most accessible ski slopes is the relative low altitude at 850m. This can mean that snow quality on lower slopes is poor, however, as I said, I got lucky in January and I was able to ski from the top of the resort at Mont Joly (around 2350m) to the base.

The groomed pistes across the resort, especially from Le Bettex (access from St Gervais via the Alpin gondola) and higher were really good. I skied easy greens through to intermediate reds and relished sunshine and fantastic views. Mont Blanc is the pinnacle of the vistas but it didn’t really matter where I looked because there were superb snow-capped mountains in all directions. St Gervais is such a great resort for picture-postcard mountain views.

The lifts were mostly a mix of gondolas and chairlifts and it was fairly easy to navigate myself around the resort when I didn’t have my friend Jo – and her daughter Rosa – to guide me about.

I’d rate St Gervais as a good option for a family ski holiday.

The bonus of a longer stay in the area is access to other resorts further up the valley, including Les Contamines, and at higher altitude. It’s also possible to link in with resorts such as Les Houches and Chamonix by using the bus or train system.

I met other people also ski touring.

Ski tour morning in St Gervais

As well as using the lifts, I followed a ski touring (randonnée) route from Le Bettex to Mont Joux at 1965m. It was great to have signs to follow – although I did go a bit off route higher up! – and to burn some energy skiing uphill.

I skied behind and head of other tourers and also met many people on snowshoes. Once I reached Mont Joux, I carried on piste skiing using the lift system.

For more ideas on where to ski off-piste or for ski touring, it would be worth hiring a local guide.  And for anyone tempted to turn a St Gervais trip into a bigger alpine objective, a Mont Blanc expedition is something to plan with an experienced, certified mountain guide, given the altitude, glacier travel, and fast-changing weather on the mountain. Mont Blanc is a serious high-altitude climb that typically involves technical terrain, acclimatisation and objective hazards, so guided trips are the standard approach for most climbers.
