Review: GearHooks for sports kit storage
I admire people who find a gap in the market for a clever invention. I come across so many things that are annoying on a practical level and I think: “Oh, I wish I could find a way to make that simpler, easier…” but I never do a thing about it. Luis Prtak was frustrated by a lack of good storage for his family’s bikes and sports kit… so he set about creating a solution.
GearHooks is the result. Luis had bought and tried many different types of hooks and brackets in a bid to solve the problem of sports equipment storage at home but he found they failed in a number of different ways. For example, they were cheap and flimsy, or good but too expensive, or too fiddly to fit.
The main problem, though, was that every time his family got another bike, or a new bike with wider or narrower handlebars or different sized wheels, he had to start changing or moving the hooks around. That meant new devices and drilling new holes etc.
As a mechanical engineer with more than 40 years experience of designing and manufacturing world class products for many industries, Luis was in the perfect place to invent his own home storage solution for sports kit.
What is GearHooks?
GearHooks is a simple but brilliantly adaptable device for storing all kinds of sports equipment, including bikes, ski and snowboard items, golf clubs, climbing kit, rucksacks etc. You could also use it for the storage of musical instruments or gardening items.
The basic structure of GearHooks is simple and easy to fit to a wall. A GearRail (a metal rail that is sold in a range of great colours) requires just three holes for securing to the wall. It comes with fixings and rawplugs.
Once the GearRail is affixed to the wall you simply add hooks of different shapes and sizes suitable for different items. You can change the hooks and move them around with great ease.
So many uses of GearHooks
You can a GearRail solely for road bikes, only for mountain bikes or for a mix of bikes.
You can store ski kit, alongside a bike and with a climbing rope or two. You can line up a series of GearHooks rails and store all the range of sports equipment that is currently leaning against walls and bookcases, cluttering up cupboards and rooms and sheds (well, it is in our house!).
As soon as Hubby G saw the device he immediately decided it would be perfect for his climbing gear. He likes being able to see all the items laid out and climbing kit is quite tricky to store in general…
…But I could see how useful the GearHooks would be for all of our skis, boots, poles, helmets and rucksacks. And then we would need another rack for the bikes.
To be honest, we are only limited by available wall space and a lack of a garage. In the end, we decided to share the rack, but I am keen to get another as soon as we can.
I like that it’s so easy to add items to the racks and that you can see everything laid out neatly before you. We have so many items of sports equipment that it is good to find a device that takes all kinds of items in one place regardless of shape or length.
GearHooks is UK-made and has a lifetime warranty. If you manage to break it, the company will fix it or replace it free of charge.
I think the prices are also very reliable and delivery was speedy.
