5 reasons to take spicy jerky on your next hiking trip

For many hikers, spicy beef jerky is an all-time favourite when it comes to throwing in last-minute extras that are quick and easy. Plus, you can usually find some kind of jerky snack at the local convenience store before heading out to the trails. If you still are not convinced that it will make a great food choice on your next hiking trip, consider these five reasons.

1. Simple portability

Undoubtedly, one of the best reasons to pack some spicy beef jerky on your next hike is because of the simplicity and ease of doing so. Because of the packaging and preparation, most jerky is easy to carry and consume, even while moving. Even better, it is mostly mess-free. Jerky is generally much less messy than many other snack choices.

2. Freshness & longevity

An added bonus of jerky is how long it can last. Unlike some snacks that will spoil or melt, jerky is generally tough and holds up well against elements like heat or cold that would otherwise ruin many other snacks. For this reason, it can be smart to save your jerky as long as possible on your trip while eating the foods that will spoil sooner first.

3. Protein and energy

Another reason to take jerky along on your next hiking trip is that it can give you more energy when you need it most outdoors. At some point during your hike, your body is going to slow down and jerky can give you the added protein boost that it needs.

Think about the way you need to refill with water; eating enough protein to maintain energy works in a similar way. The only difference is that you need to consume more than water to “rehydrate” your protein levels.

4. Reduced fat

In addition to being high in protein, spicy jerky is also low in fat. As such, it can help your body put the added energy it gives you to good use while helping to keep your muscles and endurance strong. When food does not contain a lot of fat, it is easier for the body to break down.

As a result, jerky is a solid option if you want to consume healthy food that will help your body grow strong at the same time while enjoying the great outdoors.

5. Good for the immune system

Speaking of good health while hiking, jerky is also a great snack option if you want to find a natural way to boose your body’s immune system. Containing an abundance of iron and zinc, jerky is an easy-to-consume resource for both of these vital nutrients. When your immune system is high functioning, your chances of getting sick significantly decrease.

If you have thought about bringing some jerky along on your next trek, let these five reasons be your inspiration. Your taste buds will thank you.
