A new trail running event in southern Scotland launches next month. As well as three daytime trail runs, there will be a night-time 10k that includes a beautiful 100m arboreal avenue of light.

The Tweed Valley Trail Run, organised by Hillside Outside, takes place on Saturday October 1, 2022, with races including:

  • Daytime 20k (over 16s) – start approx. 11am.
  • Daytime 10k (over 16s) – start approx. 11am.
  • Daytime 5k (11 years and over and perfect for a first trail run) – start approx. 11am.
  • Nightfall 10k (head torches mandatory, over 16s) – start approx 6:30pm.
  • Option to run both day and night – 5k, 10k or 20k during the day and 10k at night.

Autumn running in the Tweed Valley

The Tweed Valley Trail Run 5k, 10k and 20k races will start at around 11am. The Nightfall 10k starts at 6.30pm.

There will be no mass starts, which will allow runners to run with a friend, group of pals or solo. You can start early at the front, or later at the rear of the pack.

The Tweed Valley Trail Run will be based at Hay Lodge Park, Peebles, on the banks of the River Tweed.

The event will follow the same DNA as the popular Tweed Valley Tunnel Trail Run, organised by Hillside Outside, an award-winning events team.

The new event aims to be a “beautiful and accessible running experience with a friendly, community atmosphere”. There will be a 100m arboreal avenue of light and sound effects, plus local food and drink, as well as an after-party with beers, banter and dancing.

Tweed Valley Trail Run routes

The fully waymarked and marshalled routes will alternate between dirt tracks, footpaths, gravel and stone surfaces.  They have been specially designed to offer a run through nature, including woodland, riverside and hill-tops.

The races will feature some heritage atttactions, such as Neidpath Castle and Neidpath viaduct.

The event also takes place in autumn, when the scenery of the Scottish Borders is fabulous thanks to the changing colours of leaves on trees and plants.

You might even be lucky enough to spot wildlife gems, such as red squirrels, woodpeckers, kingfishers, goosander ducks, owls, buzzards and herons.

Neil Dalgleish, event director of Hillside Outside, said: “The Tweed Valley is now rightly recognised as one of Scotland’s premier outdoor adventure destinations.

“We’re best known for cycling but the landscape and trails here make it an off-road running paradise, too.

“Outdoor tourism is hugely important for the local economy throughout the Scottish Borders.

“We’re keen to show just how good the running is here and provide a fantastic, inclusive event that new runners will love as much as the experienced off-road athletes. Putting some beautiful lighting in the forest will add a lot of fun as well.”

Hillside Outside are keen to acknowledge the huge support and cooperation from Cullen Kilshaw, the official Tweed Valley Crew Partners in 2022, Forestry and Land Scotland, Scottish Borders Council and March & Wemyss Estate in the organisation of the Tweed Valley Trail Run.
