How to prepare for a winter run in the woods

A winter run might be chilly but it’s said to be beneficial in a number of ways. For example, running outdoors has been shown in many studies to help to improve mental health and this can be very important in the winter when daylight is in short supply and depression is known to be more prevalent.

Some research also suggests that exercising in chilly temperatures can raise your energy expenditure by more than 48%! Also called thermogenesis, this phenomenon leads to the generation of brown fats, produced in response to the cold. In contrast to regular white fat, this helps control weight and muscle production.

So what equipment do you need for winter running`?

No matter the sport, using the right items is crucial as it helps guarantee mobility, stability and injury protection. Leggings and sports bras are more than just a sportswear look and will help with support, cold weather and recovery.

Dress for the conditions

In the winter, you are likely to face cold, wind and wet. Therefore, many runners choose full-length running tights rather than shorts. High-waisted running tights can also help with keeping the cold from your torso.

Layering on your top half, including baselayers and a wind or waterproof jacket, allows you to adjust your temperature by adding or taking off layers.

Then you’ll need gloves, headwear and maybe a head torch if you are runnig after dark.

Wear the right a sports bra

Women need a supportive and performance-driven sports bra for running. Always choose one that offers bust support without being too constrictive. The latter is crucial as you want the clothing to give you sufficient expansion space/breathing room during runs. Seamless options for pants, sports bras, or sports tops are always welcome as they improve comfort and wearability.

Wear the right shoes

If you are planning on a winter run in the woods, another thing to remember is the type of shoes you wear. If the ground is wet, muddy or snowy , you’ll need footwear with good traction. You can find shoes specially designed for trail/forest running for better performance.

Companies also design these shoes with specific lugs and studs to ensure that they consistently maintain traction. These inclusions help the shoes perform better when running across various surfaces. Since forest trails are littered with everything from decaying life and branches to moss and rocks, the stud placement improves your overall performance.
