Whether you’re an avid hiker or just have a love for the outdoors, Scotland should be at the top of your list for a holiday in 2024. Complete with rolling hills, rugged mountains, quaint villages, cultural towns and vibrant cities, there is something for every visitor to enjoy.
Scotland can be visited throughout the year, although the months of May, June, September and October are usually warmer, yet avoid the crowds of busy July and August.
Getting around in Scotland
Travelling around the country is easy, thanks to the well-connected roads, bus networks and trains. If you plan on travelling to the Highlands and want to avoid public transport, you can hire a car to make your journey hassle-free.
It’s easier to get between cities by rail, though. There are regular trains to major cities such as Glasgow where you can walk around the city or jump on a bus to see the rest of your itinerary.
If you want to visit the islands, there are ferries and small planes, too.
Where to visit in Scotland
Glasgow
This dynamic city is full of world-class museums, exciting attractions and a vibrant food scene. It has been rated as one of the best cities in the world for nightlife and also has a legendary music scene and iconic venues such as Barrowlands and the newer Hydro arena.
The city has more than 90 parks and gardens, including the Glasgow Botanic Gardens and Kelvingrove Park, set on the banks of the River Kelvin.
Edinburgh
The capital of Scotland has the combined charm of cobbled passageways and modern shops, bars and restaurants. Fondly known as “Auld Reekie”, you can take in the incredible architecture that is around every corner. Some noteworthy mentions include Edinburgh Castle, St. Margaret’s Cathedral and the Scott Monument.
The city also boasts a hill, Arthur’s Seat. You can walk to the summit to enjoy wide views over the capital and further afield.
Glencoe
For dramatic natural beauty and scenic views, head to Glencoe in the Highlands. There are plenty of adventure options for hikers, climbers, mountaineers, mountain bikers and wild swimmers.
Fort William
It is an easy drive from Glencoe to the outdoors town of Fort William. Attractions include Lochaber Geopark, the Jacobite steam train and Ben Nevis Distillery. The UK’s tallest mountain of Ben Nevis is located close to the town if you fancy the challenge of hiking to the 1345m summit.
If you visit in winter, you could also ski at the Nevis Range resort and if you visit in summer, there is mountain biking on offer on the same mountain.
The Cairngorms
This is the UK’s largest National Park and offers a variety of impressive experiences for visitors. Take your pick from water sports, skiing, wildlife watching and walking and cycling routes of varying levels.
If you want a break from all the outdoor activities, relax by playing a game of golf while surrounded by one of the largest Caledonian forests in Scotland.
The main town is Aviemore, with a wide range of accommodation, places to eat and shops.
